Feeling the stone beneath his paws begin to rasp at the skin, Tugger stared up at the sky, counting the stars as he kicked his legs in an attempt to find a foothold. Why had this seemed like a good idea just a few moments ago?
There was a crash as Tugger's paws, predictably, lost their grip on the top of the wall, only made louder as the dustbin below broke the fall, until the second the lid slipped off and Tugger landed on the ground in the backyard cursing to himself.
He allowed himself to lay there for a moment, before testing his limbs, discovering that they seemed to work, Tugger got somewhat unsteadily to his feet and made for the back door of the house, fumbling for his key. Eventually, he got the right one in the lock and did his best to open the door quietly. Tugger stepped into the kitchen and managed to close the back door in relative silence, grinning triumphantly to himself. At least, he hoped, he'd got in without disturbing his father.

Macavity had been sitting in the kitchen, a book in one paw, and his other arm leaning against the table, propping his head up, with his legs crossed. He hated being in the living room for any amount of time and so often stayed up reading in the kitchen instead. Plus, it was harder to see a light from the kitchen than the living room.
He titled his head and frowned at the sound of a crash, snapping the book closed and really hoping at least this time it was Tugger coming in.
It was way too late for the other to be out after all. "Where were you?" he demanded as the other closed the door behind him.

Tugger stopped grinning as he caught sight of his brother. "Jus' out wi' some friends." he did his best to sound causal.

Mac looked less than impressed. "This late at night?" he demanded and then looked the other over again and his expression changed completely from brotherly worry to something more akin to rage. "You're drunk," he said, voice slow, as a statement rather than a question.

"Wasn't late when we went out," was Tugger's best arguement, "course it's later now." Quite possibly he'd not realised just how late. However his ears did flick back at Macavity's next statement, his subconscious recognising his brother's reaction, even if he didn't. "I ain't."

Mac's eyes narrowed. "You are," he snapped. "Just think about the last thin' you said, or can you with that alcohol addled brain?"

Tugger growled, though the sound was sulky rather than angry, "Couple'a drinks don't mean I am... Got home didn't I?"

"Our father has found his way home many nights," Mac nearly snarled in reply. "That means nothin' that you did ta. And are you sure it was only a couple drinks?" he sneered, giving his brother another look over. He could feel all the fur along his spine standing on end.

Tugger really did growl at that, "One night an' you're writin' me off like him..." Tugger aimed to push past his brother and make for the front room, ending up slamming his shoulder against Macavity's as he swayed unsteadily with the movement, "Thanks f'nothin'!"

Mac growled in reply, about to open his mouth and inform Tugger that alcohol made everycat the same idiot, when the other slammed into him. For a long moment, that was probably longer in his mind than real time, he froze utterly, though the shock of the impact caused him to stagger back slightly. He shoved Tugger away, even though they were no longer really touching. He figured it was better that than throwing his youngest brother across the table.
"Thanks for nothin'?" he demanded hotly, only not yelling because their father was home. "You're the one who came home drunk!" he hissed.

Still intoxicated enough to be off balance, Tugger nearly tripped at the slight contact of Macavity pushing him away, managing to stay upright, but stumbling back into a chair and swearing altogether too loudly.
It sounded loud compared to Macavity and Tugger remembered just about to check his voice before he responded again.
"I told you," he replied, through gritted teeth, one hand still steadying himself against the table, "I ain't drunk! I had a couple of drinks an' it woulda' bin' no problem if you ain't started accusin' me of bein' a low life the second I get in!"

His ears laying flat at the loud sound of the cursing, Mac took a step back, his fur standing almost entirely on end. "You aren't standin' straight and it's no problem?" Mac demanded. "It's ungodly late, and you are damn well drunk."

"Look, I..." Tugger started before trailing off, he really didn't have an answer for that one, "It ain't the same." he said finally, biting back another growl, though his tone was bitter "It don't make me like him."

Mac barred his teeth at that. "Tonight? Maybe not." He let the implication that it very well could make Tugger like him linger in the air between them.

Tugger let out a hiss at that, but said nothing at first, bitterly hurt his brother was still suggesting that comparison.
"If y'don't think I'll turn out any better than him, why are y'even botherin', huh? Why did y'ever bother. I always thought y'had my back. Guess I was wrong."
