Tantomile studied Charles for a second, "Perhaps we should take our drinks elsewhere?" she suggested finally, making the most excuse she would for herself in the suggestion that she would likely do better in less close proximity to her brother.

He considered for a moment and then nodded. "Perhaps we should indeed." He straightened. "After you, Miss."

Tantomile gave Charles a nod, not quite able to manage a smile yet, "Thank you." She wove her way off into the crowd a little way, glass in hand, before checking back to check the Turkish Van was following.

Charles was a couple of steps behind her, but he paused as he thought he heard his name. He turned, his brows rising as he sent a silent curse toward whatever devil in Hell decided this was a good idea.
Good, he had timed this right. Cori came to a stop about a pace from Charles, and from Tantomile as well. "Charles Anderson? It's been absolutely years. How are you?"
He glanced toward Tantomile and then back at the shorter tom. "I'm well." A long pause. "and yourself?"
Cori managed what might have been a cordial enough smile, but there was something cold in his expression as he glanced at his twin. "I'm doing well. And how about you, Tanta?"

Tantomile had turned sharply at the sound of her brother's voice, and didn't miss the look he gave her, biting back the cutting reply she really wanted to give for the sake of appearances in front of Charles. Typical Coricopat, waiting until he had her in that position to approach.
She finally offered her brother a smile, though there was nothing friendly in it, "I've been having a rather lovely evening as it happens." Up until now!

He smiled thinly at her. "Glad to hear it. Will the two of you be staying for a while?" He spoke, careful that his words were ambiguous just enough to be taken either as an address to them separately or together.
Charles' ears flickered, not sure whether the second implication was intentional or not. He watched Cori carefully for a moment, trying to judge the other's motives, but decided it was just best not to respond to that question.

Tantomile didn't need to work it out, she knew what her brother was trying to do. "I think I'll stay so long as I'm enjoying myself and there's worthwhile company." she replied, smiling much more warmly at Charles than she had at her brother, "Certainly I'm glad I ran into you. Though of course I won't keep you if you had other plans for tonight. There are a number of others I should say a hello to at some point."

Charles returned the smile, albeit not entirely sure he was comfortable being addressed in the midst of this hardly civil discourse. "I've nothing else I was planning to do this evening and I haven't any work tomorrow so I was intending to stay for a while yet."
Hm, interesting, she didn't rise to the bait. Though outright ignoring him was not improving Cori's mood. "What do you do with yourself now, Charles?"
He turned his gaze back to the other tom. "I'm an accountant at a firm downtown, and you?"
Cori looked singularly unimpressed by the job 'accountant.' "ADA. A good job anyway."

Tantomile was glad she'd been able to respond dispelling any implications her brother's comment had held, though she hoped she wasn't forcing Charles to take sides, not so much because she was worried about how it would affect him, but because she knew if she came across as the worse of the two, he might decide she was being unjust towards her twin. If he was going to side with either of them, she would rather it was her, besides, she believed firmly, especially after their previous fight, that Coricopat didn't care a button for an old friend, he was just using Charles to irritate her.
She arched an eyebrow at Coricopat's downplaying of his job, "I told you he'd done well for himself," she remarked to the Turkish Van, turning to her brother to add, just a little too sweetly, "who knows, you might even make it to DA one of these days."

Charles' friendly smile had faded at the mention of Coricopat's job. "Hm, somehow I wouldn't have pictured you in law. But I suppose cats change."
Coricopat's jaw tensed, how much a cat changed depended on circumstances. He looked to his sister. "Who knows, I might. And what about you, Tanta? Eye on anything higher than where you are already?" Maybe in reference to her job, maybe in reference to her tendency for dating those that benefited her.

"As I was saying to Charles not long before you interr- joined us," she gave him an extra sweet smile with the deliberate slip of the tongue, "I'm very satisfied with what I've achieved, but it never hurts to keep extending, after all, no one is perfect, there's always more we can learn in life."

"But really, Tanta, what more is there for you to do? After all, you have your own practice and act as a consultant for the law."

Tantomile was inwardly furious with that comment, but she brushed it aside, "Perhaps, Cori dear, you should worry about yourself first, as you say, I'm already at the top of my field. One can always spread wider once they've aimed higher, but you have to get there first after all." she knew she was pushing the boundaries of barely veiled insults there, but her brother's last comment had riled her. It was more than her pride was worth not to hit back just as hard.

"I can do what I need to well enough with the position I have and the pay is remarkably good. Can you say the same?" After all, she still wasn't getting quite the respect from some cats that he was sure she wanted.
Charles watched the exchange, but stayed quiet--seriously considering moving away to see if he could locate anycat else to talk to.

Then again, those cats Tantomile wasn't getting respect from, she probably never would, no matter what she was doing.
"I wouldn't dream of discussing what I earn in pubic Cori, you know that. You also know it's more than comfortable." there was no nicety in Tantomile's voice anymore, as she snapped at her brother, she'd looked across and seen Charles' expression, it hardly mattered anymore if she bothered to appear polite.
