The doctor nodded. "Da." He looked up, meeting Macavity's eyes. "If I could speak with you a moment?"

Mac blinked over at him. "You mean..." he cut the sentence off, his posture growing more wary. He glanced over at Tugger again and finally pushed himself off from where he was against the wall. "I'll be back in a moment, Tug, okay?" he said, leaning down and running a paw over Tugger's headfur again. "You'll be okay here for a bit?"

Tugger eased himself off the bed, making a beeline for Macavity's side until his brother addressed him. He stopped where he was, nodding, he didn't really want to be alone right now, but he knew it wouldn't be for long. He fiddled with his tail again as he watched the two cats leave.

Mac offered Tugger a tired smile before leaving, walking out in front of the doctor, turning to him once outside, his posture wary.

Cohen closed the door softly behind them, looking up at the younger tom with a frown. "What happened to him?"

Mac crossed his arms over his chest. "Told you, didn't I?"

"No. You offered me a lie and hoped that I would believe it." The Russian Blue's eyes narrowed behind his glasses.

He barred his teeth and thought better of it, forcing himself not to growl. "What the hell do you want me ta say then? That our drunken bastard of a father threw a bottle at his back? Would it make you feel better knowin' that?" He was tired and emotionally wrung dry. Every other doctor he had ever talked to simply took his stories at face value and finding on that didn't disturbed him a bit.

The doctor sighed. "Well, it means that I can let him go with you in better conscience now. Have you two nowhere else to go?"

Mac gaped at him for a second, his fur standing on end. "You thought that I would...?" he visibly forced himself to calm down. He crossed his arms over his chest again. "That's a stupid question you know. If we had anyplace ta go, don't you think we would have? Of course there's nowhere else."

Cohen's jaw tensed a bit. "Well, you have to admit as blatant a lie you told me earlier wasn't conducive to me thinking otherwise." He sighed. "I strongly recommend you find somewhere else. Even a small apartment. There are some that don't cost much in the way of rent."

Mac rocked back on his heels, looking the doctor over again. "If you find a way for me to pay for said apartment, I'll think about it," Mac said slowly. Damnit, damnit, damnit. He had not only admitted their father was the one who did it, but that they were poor as dirt, mostly because of said father and his gambling debts.

Cohen sighed again. He really wished there was something more he could do. Shaking his head slightly, he spoke again. "Well, take care. If you need help I'm usually to be found here."

Mac paused, and his stance softened slightly. He swallowed. "How much... how much do I owe you?"

He took his glasses off, cleaning them on the corner of his coat. "A thank you, and seeing that your brother doesn't strain those wounds too much. We don't want any of his stitches popping. They'll scar anyway, but they may be less noticeable if cared for."
