They got quite the look from the bus driver, but when Mac paid the cat let them on without much fuss. Settling down into a seat, Mac slung one arm over Tugger's shoulders, carefully keeping it above where the wounds were.

Tugger leant against his brother's side, he still couldn't lean back on the seat without pain, sleeping was going to be fun tonight.
He was silent for most of the bus journey, but a stop from theirs he stiffened at a sudden thought.

Mac glanced down at him when he felt him stiffen. "What?" he asked, thinking he knew what it was but not entirely sure.

"What if he's home?" the 'he' Tugger was referring to was obvious.

Mac bit his lip, not thinking that saying he would then kill their father was a good idea. "He won't be," he said quietly. "He leaves again this late in the day and he doesn't come back until the mornin'."

Tugger nodded, hoping against hope that his brother was right. He was about to find out anyway, the bus was slowing down for their stop.

"Come on," Mac said rising and leading the way off the bus and then down the last block to the house. He glanced over at Tugger and slowed before stopping. "Let me go in first," he said. "I'll look around, okay?"

Tugger nodded, he gave his brother a grateful look, "'Kay, I... thanks Mac."

Mac rolled a shoulder. "Of course, Tug." He walked up to the house, opening the door carefully and peeked in. No, it did not look like there father was home. He did a quick sweep of the ground floor anyway, and even ran upstairs to make sure he wasn't lurking in any corners before emerging and motioning to Tugger. "See? Not here. Come on, let's 'et you ta bed."

"It ain't that late," Tugger protested weakly, saying it more on principal than because he actually didn't want to sleep. In reality he felt pretty drained, physically and emotionally.
He stepped inside the house, still sticking a lot closer to Macavity than he normally would have. Though he stopped short when he saw the mess of broken glass around the stairs properly for the first time.

Mac sighed, going to get the broom, figuring it would be best to clean up the mess before their father returned. "It's late enough," he said softly. "If you want ta go up and 'et ready, I'll be up in a few minutes." He was figuring he would just sleep in Munkustrap's bed that night, since the other was away at college. Maybe move the dresser in front of the door before going to sleep.

Another wordless nod, and after a few moments, Tugger followed his brother's suggestion, picking his way carefully around the glass on the stairs and managing to retrieve his bookbag from where he'd dropped it to escape his father.
Ten minutes later, he was sat on his bed in a pair of hand-me-down grey flannel pyjama bottoms and thin white undershirt, knees drawn up to his chin with his arms and tail wrapped around them.

Mac entered the room, running a hand through his headfur, having also changed for bed after cleaning up the downstairs. "Hey," he said softly. "You want me ta sleep in here with you? I don't think 'straps will mind me usin' his bed for the night." He glanced over at the dresser, considering shoving it in front of the door before sleeping.

If scrapes to the floorboards were anything to go by, Tugger had been in the habit of moving that dresser on a semi-regular basis since Munkustrap moved to college.
"Y'don't hafta'..." he paused then nodded, "Maybe a bit." he admitted in a small voice.

"It's no problem on my part," Macavity said, finally deciding he would rather be safe than have their father come home drunk at three in the morning and come banging through the door. He shoved the dresser in front of the door before coming over and sitting on the edge of Munkustrap's bed. "You goin' ta be alright?" he asked softly, knowing the answer to some degree would probably be a no.
